Alternative interactive media interfaces

Submitted by Ari on Thu, 02/15/2007 - 23:19.

(alternative new media interfaces are not always better)

Uncle Sam Pointing Finger
Have you checked out dontclick.it
before? It’s an experiment in usability where the websites whole
interface is designed without the need to use mouse buttons (all
actions are triggered by rollovers).

An interesting concept, but how useful is it the real world?

The main presumption a “no click” interface makes is the user has
determined what it is they want to achieve before they start to move
their mouse. In my personal experience, I move the mouse with my
thought process, similar to how my eyes move with text when reading. As
I scan the contents of a page, I subconsciously scan it with the mouse
– it is only once I make a decision as to what I want that I actually
click.

Some people point at things before they walk towards them. Similar concept there -

In other words, I find the click very valuable, and prefer
interfaces which are reliant on it. I can actually move faster through
pages because of the click, as I am less likely to end up down the
wrong path unintentionally. I’m sure a no-click interface is
appropriate for some new media projects – I just don’t know if a
website is the best one.
